REUSE, RECOVER, RECYCLE

As a busy distributor, we have lots of cardboard boxes incoming and outgoing on a daily basis; it’s our responsibility that excess boxes and packaging is sustainably recycled or reused. In 2016 we purchased a cardboard shredding machine to shred all of our incoming wasted cardboard into suitable packaging material for our outgoing parcels; avoiding the requirement to use any non-biodegradable plastic materials. For fragile parcels and glass bottles we use a flo-pack which is made from recycled materials, CFC free and ozone friendly. The combination of these two options results in us being able to use 100% recycled packaging in all of our non IATA shipments.

In 2013 our e-commerce team went paperless, with our internal sales team following suit in 2019. In the few areas that we haven’t been able to go paperless, we are environmentally conscious and have our used paper collected, shredded and recycled. This was temporarily paused throughout COVID, but since the return to the office, we are hopeful that this service will resume shortly.

Other recycling schemes we have running at TECHSiL include batteries, a scheme also offered to all TECHSiL employees personal use batteries from home; ink cartridges from all printers and label machines; used metal pails and drums and all recycled and turned back into steel.

As the majority of TECHSiL materials are date sensitive, they manage their stock rotation using a FIFO (first in first out) stock system to keep wastage to a bare minimum. Where product wastage is unavoidable TECHSiL works with a group of specialist companies, all of whom are fully licenced by the environments agency for both the transport and treatment of hazardous waste, to sustainably dispose of the material.

Energy Saving Advancements

TECHSiL moved into larger premises based in Bidford on Avon, Warwickshire back in 2012. Since the move we have made numerous energy saving changes to the building, reducing our energy consumption and emissions. For example, all windows and door frames were replaced with PVCU double glazing; reducing heat loss. The original ‘wet’ heating system was taken out and largely replaced with a heat pump system in our offices and meeting rooms, cutting emissions and saving energy; a system which is regularly maintained to optimise efficiency. All lighting in the offices, corridors, meetings rooms and warehouse were replaced with an LED lighting system in 2019; further reducing energy consumption, emissions and cost. And in 2021 the boiler was also replaced with a hot water boiler; resulting in water only being heated on demand rather than constantly running, reducing both emissions and costs.

General Waste Management

TECHSiL has weekly general dry waste collections from Grundon Waste Management; a Company who recently joined up with Lakeside Energy from Waste Ltd to develop a major new venture to incinerate and convert all of their collected waste into energy for the national grid; any remaining ash is used to make building blocks for insulation. Therefore, no waste from TECHSiL ends up in landfills.

Through this new scheme; over 410,000 tonnes of residual waste is processed each year, generating circa 34 Mw of electricity for distribution via the National Grid - enough to power 50,000 homes.
